People who have acne experience depression, embarrassment and social anxiety when they have acne. More than 25% of men and 50% of women suffer from "adult acne" after the age of 25 years of age.

If you had acne in your adolescence, then it may even reoccur after 25 years of age. Sometimes in certain conditions like during pregnancy, the old acne reappears.

Acne

If you have adult acne for the first time, you should consult a dermatologist to confirm that these are acne and not folliculitis (which resemble acne); and to investigate the underlying cause. The folliculitis occur when the hair follicles become infected.

The reasons of "adult acne" of are following:

  1. Hormonal conditions: Changes in the hormonal conditions during the menstruation or pregnancy. The hormonal balance can also alter by hormones and birth control pills.
  2. Acne mechanics: The adult acne may be due to continues physical pressure on your facial skin known as acne mechanical. Examples of this condition are holding a violin between the jaw and chin and the straps of a backpack.
  3. Medication: Some medications that can induce acne. These medications include anabolic steroids, some anti-epileptic medications, the anti-tuberculosis drugs, some birth control pills and medication containing lithium and iodine.
  4. Bad cosmetics: Some sunscreens, moisturizers, greases and oils. Choose oil-free, non-acnegenic products, medicated cleansers with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.
  5. Working in an environment with chlorine is very harmful.
  6. Stress: Stress causes your oil glands to overcompensate.

Adult Acne Treatment or Cure

Acne that occurs in adulthood due to hormonal changes (hormonal acne ) generally do not respond to the over-the-counter treatments available for teenage acne cure. The hormonal adult acne treatment requires a visit to your doctor who may treat you to get your hormones in check.

The treatment options available for women with hormonal acne include topical retinoids, topical antimicrobials (such as benzoyl peroxide and antibiotics), and oral contraceptive pills (OCPs). The OCPs decrease the production of androgen that is responsible for adult acne. Your doctor may also prescribe you an anti-androgen medication such as spironolactone.

  1. Use medicated cleansers with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Exfoliate with a salicylic acid treatment which will clean out pores, 2 to 3 times a week.
  2. Proactiv Solution, Retinoids, antibiotics, azelaic acid, birth control pills and laser treatments are options for adult acne that your dermatologist may suggest you to use.
