Diabetes is a serious disease and there is no treatment of it. However, it can be brought under control by proper diabetes food plan and diabetes diet. If neglected, diabetes can lead to various complications such as: damage to the kidneys, heart disease, nerve damage, hypoglycemia (drastic reduction in glucose levels).

Diabetes Cure or Treatment : Food Tips

Dr Neal Barnard, a noted nutrition researcher with US-based National Institute of Health,said (15 Jan 2008) that type2 diabetes can be dramatically kept under control by avoiding western food, that is by adapting a non-meat, non-dairy diet.

Food is one of the main factors that affects blood glucose levels, fortunately you can control it. Healthy eating with a healthy lifestyle is the basis of managing diabetes.

Diabetes Food Plan for Diabetics

  1. Never skip meals. Include high fiber carbohydrate foods which lead to a slow and gradual rise in blood glucose levels. Choose a variety of foods including vegetables, fruit, breads, cereals, dairy products, etc.

    • Breads like whole grain, multi grain varieties.

    • High fiber breakfast cereals especially oats, and other bran cereals. Go to High fiber foods

    • Whole wheat pasta

    • Rice and grains like basmati rice, barley, etc. Go to rice recipes.

    • Legumes and lentils such as baked beans, kidney beans, chick peas, mung dal, etc.

    • Fruits - such as oranges, apples and stone fruits.

    • All vegetables.

    • Starchy vegetables such as sweet potato, corn, potatoes, etc.

    • Skim milk, skim yogurt. The archive of Internal Medicine, 2005 has reported the results of a research study of 12 years on 41000 men, showing that the risk of developing diabetes Type 2 fell as intake of low fat daily products increase.

    • A study (January 2004 issue of the Journal Diabetes Care) suggests that magnesium-rich foods like can significantly lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, even in obese people. People should therefore, get the recommended amount of magnesium by eating leafy green vegetables, nuts, and other magnesium-rich foods. Supplemental magnesium can be harmful, especially for people with kidney disease, says Diabetes expert Jerry Nadler.

  2. Limit intake of excess sugars in foods which are high in saturated fat like baked foods or low in nutritional value lollies and soft drink.

  3. Consume moderate total fat and limit saturated fat

  4. Limit alcohol.

  6. Insulin shots: Recommended for type I diabetes.

Home Cures for Diabetes

Following home remedies may control diabetes.

  1. Eat 1-2 reaspoons of coarsely powdered fenugreek seeds (dana methi) in the morning everyday. Soak 2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds in 1 cup water at night. Drink this water first thing in the morning.   2. A teaspoon of cinnamon a day may help prevent the onset of diabetes II, according to a New Scientist report published in 2000. Nutritionist Richard Anderson advises, "People with type II diabetes could help themselves.... take a quarter to a full teaspoon a day of cinnamon, in coffee, tea or orange juice."

    Research at the Agricultural Research Unit in Maryland indicates that cinnamon increases the glucose removal in diabetes patients by 20 times.

  3. Drink 1 tablespoon of amla (Indian gooseberry) juice mixed with a cup of bitter gourd (karela) juice daily for 2 months.

  4. Drink 3-4 teaspoon juice of bitter gourd (karela) daily in the morning on an empty stomach.

  5. Chew 10-15 basil (tulsi) leaves in the morning.

  6. Eat half a teaspoon of powdered mango leaves twice a day.
