Chapped lips, cracked & dry lips causes and remedies are considered. Know how to heal a fat lip at home.

Lips are delicate skin, similar to the skin on the rest of your body. But lip skin does not produce natural oils to protect itself. Lips therefore become cracked or chapped if you don't take proper care of them. Sore, dry, cracked and chapped lips are common in the winter due to dry air or cold weather conditions.

  1. Apply petroleum jelly or vaseline or lip balm on the lips to soothe and heal irritated lips. Apply aloe vera or vitamin E ointment or rub a cucumber slice on your lips.
  2. Avoid lip plumpers.
  3. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  4. Do not stay too long in low humidity environment.
  5. Avoid licking your lips.
  6. See your Doctor if your lips are not getting better with home remedies.
  7. Change your toothbrush every three months. wash the toothbrush regularly with soap water.

Causes of Dry, Sore & Chapped Lips

  1. Weather
    Extreme weather conditions like cold, warm and wind can contribute to dry and cracked lips. Low humidity level can cause your lips and skin to dry. AC in house and car dries up the air, thereby decreasing the humidity level.
    Lips unprotected in a strong wind can become dry and cracked.
    Too much intense sun can burn the lips.
  2. Low fluid in take
    If you drink very less water, then your skin and lips get dry. Dehydration results in chapped lips.
  3. Cosmetics
    Lip cosmetics containing capsaicin, mint, menthol and phenol irritate lips and can contribute to drying out the lips.
  4. Foods
    Acidic and spicy foods can cause dryness and irritation and burn lips. Some food allergies may be responsible for chapped lips.
  5. Certain medicines
    Certain acne medications and anti-aging products such as benzoyl peroxide, alpha-hydroxy acids or retinoids can cause irritation when they come into contact with the lips. Some medicines like retinoids and phenothiazine cause induced lips.
  6. Smoking or chewing
    Too much smoking and betel chewing can cause cracks in lips.
  7. Vitamin deficiencies
    Deficiency of certain vitamins like vitamin A, B, B2, C, etc. may also affect lips.
  8. Toothbrush
    If your toothbrush is old and the teethes are distorted or if the brush contains bacteria, then they can create rashes on lips. Change the toothbrush.
  9. Habit of pulling lip skin
    Some people have the habit of licking lips, rubbing lips with fingers and pulling out lip skin. It may cause cracks in the lip.
  10. Sometimes badly fitting dentures can cause lip cracks.
