Sinus Infection

The sinus infection is an inflammation of the sinuses and nasal passages. As result of sinus infection you may have headache, fever, cough, bad breath, nasal congestion, nasal secretions and/or pressure in the cheek area, eyes, nose or on one side of the head.

The sinuses, the hollow air-filled sacks or pockets connect the space between the nostrils and the nasal passage. There are four sinuses as follows:

Acute sinusitis | Chronic sinusitis | Symptoms of sinusitis infection | Chronic sinusitis symptoms

In the Forehead: Frontal sinuses: These sinuses are above the eyebrows.

Behind the Cheek Bones: Maxillary sinuses:

Between the Eyes: Ethmoid sinuses: Ethmoid sinuses are found on each side of the bridge of the nose.

Behind the Eyes: Sphenoid sinuses: These sinuses on either side of the head, above the ears.

All of these sinuses are covered with a mucus layer and cells. The little hairs on the cell surfaces help trap and propel bacteria and pollutants outward, thus providing defenses against foreign bacteria.

Sinuses help insulate the skull, reduce its weight and allow the voice to resonate within it.

Sinusitis is categorized as

  1. Acute sinusitis: A viral infection in the upper respiratory tract, allergens, pollutants, fungi or bacteria may trigger acute sinusitis. Acute sinusitis usually lasts for less than 10 days and occurs less than 3 times per year.
  2. Chronic sinusitis: Chronic sinusitis usually lasts for less than 20 days and occurs more than 4 times per year. It is the most common type of sinusitis.
