We all Indians know the diffrence between Chana Dal, Chola dal (Chick peas split) and split peas dal. Please state the difference between these three. I will just assume as per Dr. Rick Mandosa's compiled data, Chana Dal has a very low GI and GL. But Garbanzo beans as they are called in Maxico and we call them Chola Dal and the chick peas do not have very low GI and GL. I am sure you are in a better position to explain the differene.
Chana dal (Bengal gram, Botanical Name: Cicer arietinum) is the most popular legume in India. It is delicious, very nutritious and easily digested. It is produced by removing the outer layer of kala chana and then splitting the kernel. Chana dal is powdered to make besan (in Western countries it is chickpea flour).
Chana dal has a very low GI value, infact, the lowest of all dal. So it is very good for people with diabetes.
GI Values of Dals
Chana dal (Bengal gram dal), dry: 5
Rajmah (Kidney beans): 27
Chickpeas (Garbanzo beans): 28
Urad dal (Black beans) 43
Black eyed beans: 41
Chowli dal (chawli dal, black-eyed peas split)
Mung beans (Green gram) 38
The list of GI values as given above is a guide only, as different sources report values of dals, raw, cooked, canned, etc. The above dals are available from Indian grocery stores in Western countries.
