Gas in abdomen/chest

This question is related to the gas in abdomen (stomach). My husband was on the Atkins diet for about a year and a half. He decided to go back to his high-fiber/carb diet about 2 months ago. Ever since that time, he has had tremendous problems with gas/pressure in his abdomen/chest/back. He has had a complete check-up, upper GI, esophagram, endoscopy and colonoscopy, with no diagnosis yet. Could the change to high fiber diet cause this problem??

Yes. Check with his doctor regarding Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Try cutting back on insoluble fiber foods, then slowly and carefully add them back to the diet. Drink lots of water and plenty of exercise helps.

Gas in Abdomen

Most people produce 1 - 3 pints of gas in their large intestines everyday and pass it on an average of 15 times a day by burping or farting. This gas is made up of gases like carbon dioxide, hydrogen and methane, produced by bacteria in the large intestine. Most of the times, these gases are odorless, however, sometimes the bacteria may produce gas containing sulfur that is bad smelling.

Note that the burping is also due to swallowing of air as a result of eating food too rapidly, drinking fizz sodas and cokes and anxiety.

Excessive amount of gas produce discomfort in stomach (abdomen). If the fas is not expelled, then it causes intermittent pain and cramps in the abdomen. When the pain occurs on the upper left or right side, it may be mistaken for heart disease or appendicitis or gallstones.

The gas or pressure feeling in the abdoman and chest may be due to adding too much fiber in diet too quickly. This can cause intestinal gas, constipation and other digestive discomforts. These side effects usually go away after a short period. Persons on high fiber diet should drink at least 8 glasses of water daily.
