Ageing Process And Body Age Test

The aging process depends on genetic and environmental factors and vary from person to person. Several changes in individual cells and organs of our body occur gradually as we age.

Although the genetic factors are more important in speeding up the ageing, many environmental conditions have a substantial effect. A healthy lifestyle is an important factor in healthy aging and longevity.

Problems of Ageing Population

As we age, most of the body's organs perform less efficiently. Our vision and hearing power deteriorate, muscle strength weakens, immune system weakens, skin and blood vessels become less flexible, and there is an overall decline in body performance.

The following cellular and bodily changes are associated with the process of ageing. These create many problems.

  1. The rate at which cells multiply tends to slow down as we age.
  2. Certain cells important for our immune system decrease with age.
  3. Ageing interferes with apoptosis, which programs cells to die at appropriate times.
  4. Heart
    Heart muscle becomes less efficient.
    Blood vessels become less elastic.
    Fatty deposits may form on the walls of arteries.
    As a result of this, the arteries become stiffer, needing heart to work harder, leading to high blood pressure.

  5. Brain and nervous system
    The number of neurons in brain decreases.
    Memory becomes less efficient.
    Reflexes become slower.
    Coordination decreases.

  6. Bones and joints
    Bones shrink in size, their density reduces and become more susceptible to fracture.
    Muscles, tendons and joints lose flexibility and strength.

  7. Digestive system
    Digestion may slow down.
    Constipation.

  8. Kidneys, bladder and urinary tract
    Kidneys become less efficient.
    Loss of bladder control (urinary incontinence).

  9. Eyes
    One of the most common changes in aging is visual changes, whether you have noticed that just now you need contact lenses or glasses, or you may feel tired quicker than before.
    Aging is a natural process, but we sure can delay some of the signs of aging and hopefully be able to age healthy.
    Eyes produce less tears, retinas thin and lenses gradually become less clear.
    Cataract, glaucoma and macular degeneration.

  10. Teeth
    Dry mouth - mouth feels drier and your gums have pulled back.
    Teeth may become more brittle.
    Oral cancer is more common among aged people.

  11. Ears
    Hearing loss. Sounds and noise can damage the hair cells of inner ears.
    The walls of auditory canals thin. Eardrums thicken.

  12. Skin Aging
    Skin thins and becomes less elastic and more fragile.
    Skin drier and more wrinkles.
    Age spots.
    Skin cancer possibility.

  13. Sleep
    Disturbed sleep
    Waking up several times each night.

  14. Weight & metabolism
    Metabolism generally slows down.
    Calories not utilized efficiently and stored as fat.
    Weight gain as level of activity may decrease.

  15. Sexuality
    Sexual performance may change.
    Women: vagina walls become less elastic, vaginal dryness.
    Men: may become impotent.

Accelerated Aging Test

Skin Elasticity Test for Skin Aging

Pinch the skin between your thumb and forefinger on the back of your hand for 5 seconds. Now check how long it takes for the skin to flatten out.

Average rates:
45-50 yrs: 5 s
60 yrs: 10-15 s
70 yrs:35-55 s

Reaction Time Test

Tell a person to hold an 18-inch wooden ruler at the top, large numbers down, suspended centered above your thumb and middle finger. Ask the man to drop the ruler without warning, and you try to catch it. Repeat 3 times.

Average score
20 yrs: 11 in. mark
60 yrs: 6 in. mark
i.e. a younger person will catch it quickly.

Eye Visual Accommodation Test

Hold a newspaper in front of your naked eyes. Slowly bring the paper in closer to you, until the regular sized letters start to blur. Measure the distance from your eyes to the paper at this point.

21yrs: within 4 in.
30 yrs: within 5.5 in.
40 yrs: 9 in.
50yrs: 15 in.
60yrs: 39 in.

Static Balance Test

Stand barefoot on a hard and flat surface. Have someone stand close by in case you fall. Close your eyes and lift your dominant foot about 6 inches off of the floor and bend your knee at an angle of 45 degrees. Stay still. How long you are able to do this without moving and opening your eyes.

A younger person: usually 30 s or more
An older person: usually a few seconds only.


The above test will show you whether you are biologically ageing.
