Kidney Stones Treatment and Home Remedies

Magnesium rich foods such as apples, aprocots, avocado, beans, walnuts, etc. help prevent the formation of kidney stones.

Lemons have the highest concentration of citrate of any citrus fruit. Citrate is a natural inhibitor of kidney stone formation.
Drinking four ounces (120ml) of reconstituted lemon juice in two litres of water per day decreases the rate of stone formation, according to Roger Sur, director of UC San Diego Comprehensive Kidney Stone Center (June 2010).

For patients with recurring kidney stones (symptoms of kidney stones), a study found that a bug - a bacterium, O formigenes can cut down up to 70 per cent of the risk associated with stones with no known side-effects. The findings of the study have been published by researcher David Kaufman in the online issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology in March 2008.

Kidney Stone Home Remedies

  1. Drink more water or fluids throughout the day to produce at least 2 litres of urine in the whole day. Note that It is the amount of urine that is important, at least 2 litres of urine in the whole day.
  2. Drink the extract of the core of a banana stem to excrete stones. It is an accepted cure in India.
  3. Drink a mixture of 2 oz (60 ml) of lemon juice with 2 oz (60 ml) of olive oil and then a large glass of water. The stones should pass within 24 hours to give you relief. This remedy for kidney stones has worked for many.
  4. Drinking coconut water (naariyal paani) regularly can break up the stones and make them easier to pass out.
  5. Studies reported in 2006 by researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have discovered that a daily glass of orange juice can help prevent the recurrence of kidney stones better than other citrus fruit juices such as lemonade.
    A glass of orange juice a day may keep kidney stones at bay.
  6. Take 2 medium size onions in 1 glass of water and cook over medium heat. When it cools down, blend in a blender. Strain and drink the juice for 3 days. You will start passing the stones from the second day. This remedy has worked for many.
  7. Take 1 cup of pomegranates seeds and 2 cups of horse gram (Kulthi) and make of soup. Drink this soup for kidney stone removal.
  8. Remove the beans from the kidney beans pods. Boil 50 gram of these pods (chopped) in four liter of water for six hours. Strain the liquid should through a muslin and cool the liquid for about 6 hours. Drink a glass of this decoction every two hours throughout the day for the first day and, then, several times a week.
  9. Herbal remedies

    Chinese have been using the herb, "Chicken Bone Grass" for the treatment or removal of kidney stones and gallstones.
    Mix 3 oz pineapple juice, 3 oz tonic water, a pinch of nutmeg and a pinch of cinnamon and drink in the morning and night for 4-5 days.
  10. Helpful Foods
    Basil, celery, watermelon and grapes are beneficial for curing the problem of kidney stones.
  11. Follow the following eating/drinking guidelines for prevention kidney stones. These will not treat your kidney stones but will actually prevent the formation of stones.
    • Drink plenty of water and other fluids, up to 3 litres daily.
    • Avoid foods like alcoholic and carbonated beverages; condiments and pickles; certain vegetables like asparagus, beans, cabbage, cauliflower, cucumber, radish, spinach, tomato, onion, rhubarb and meat.
    • Follow a low protein diet. Excessive protein can increase uric acid, calcium and phosphorus in the urine.
    • Reduce calcium and phosphates in supplement form. They can be taken from dietary sources.
    • Do not take vitamin C supplements.
    • A diet low in protein, nitrogen and sodium intake.
    • Remain physically active. Physical activity does not allow the calcium to accumulate in the kidneys.
    • Eat foods high in vitamin A such as apricots, broccoli, cantaloupes, carrots, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, etc.
    • Vitamin B6 or pyridoxine has been shown to be useful in the treatment of kidney stones. A daily does of 100 to 150 mg of vitamin B6 or pyridoxine may be taken for months for permanent cure of kidney stones. Consult your Doctor before starting any supplements.
    • For Gall Stones
      Put 1 oz. Parsley root, 1 oz. Balm herb, 1/2 oz. Ginger root, 1/2 oz. Liquorice root in 2 quarts of water and gently simmer down to 1 quart, strain and take a wine glassful every two hours.

Kidney Stone Treatment

Surgery is not always necessary. There are other possibilities for treating the stones. If the stones are tiny or small (4mm, 2mm or less), they would pass out in the urine unnoticed by drinking plenty of water or fluids. Larger stones need proper treatment to get rid of them.

If you have more than one kidney stone, you are likely to form another; so prevention is very important. For this, your doctor must determine their cause of formation. Save any passed stone and send it to a test laboratory for its analysis along with your urine and blood. This will help in the treatment.

  1. For calcium stones: Avoid taking calcium in pill form. Foods high in calcium, including dairy products, may help prevent calcium stones.
    Avoid food with added vitamin D and calcium based antacids. If you have very acidic urine, you should eat less meat, fish, and poultry.
  2. For cystine stones: Drink enough water each day to dilute the concentration of cystine. You will need to drink 3 litre of water during the day and 1 litre during the night. It is, however, very difficult to drink so much water.

    Bottle gourd juice (Lauki juice) is useful in treating urinary problems like burning sensation in urine passage. Its alkaline nature can neutralize the acidity of urine. Drinking daily fresh juice mixed with 1 tsp of lime juice can break stones in body.

  3. Avoid foods and drinks containing oxalate. If your urine sample reveals excess of oxalate, then reduce the consumption of foods like beets, chocolate, coffee, cola, nuts, rhubarb, spinach, strawberries (all types of berries), tea, wheat bran, etc.

    In general, the following foods may increase the risk of stones, if you are prone to them.
    apple juice, berries, chocolate, cocoa, grapefruit juice, peanuts, rhubarb, spinach, tomato juice, soda and tea

  4. Medical Treatment: Certain medications can prevent formation of calcium and uric acid stones. Some diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide decrease the amount of calcium released by the kidneys into the urine.
    If drinking more fluids do not control cystine stones, your doctor may prescribe drugs such as Cuprimine or Thiola.
    Other medications are also available for curing kidney stones.
  5. Surgical Treatment: If other treatment do not work, then surgery is the option. Surgery may be considered if the stone is too large to pass on its own or if it blocks the flow of urine. Surgery also becomes necessary if the stones are damaging kidney tissue or causing constant bleeding.
  6. Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL): Shock waves are created outside the body to hit the stones. This breaks the stones break into small particles which are easily passed through the urine. This technique is very quick and the patient can resume normal activities in a few days.
  7. Endoscopic lithotripsy: Endoscopic lithotripsy using ultrasonic, ballistic or laser energy can directly fragment and remove the stones. It is also used for treatment of stones in the ureter and bladder.
